Tina presents a less familiar design “rule” that is present all around us, and one I have used in my landscape plans and interior decorating. The concept holds that images with three subjects (always an odd number) is more striking than even numbers. Sometimes nature dishes up beautiful examples, other times it seems a miracle when there are three! Often, cropping is the only way to get the desired effect. Below, three Mallard ducks stepped off shore and into the water at the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis. On the opposite shore a bright red Chihuly sculpture installment draws our attention.

Two blackbirds were harassing a crow and all landed on top of this tree. The blackbirds beaks are pointed at each other, while the crow is looking askance at them both!

The past few days I’ve been cleaning up my back yard and putting out some yard decor that gives me pleasure. Every time I looked out the bedroom window at the arch/bench where I had put two birdhouses, it nagged at me, and with this prompt I realized I needed to add one more. Now, I feel a sense of calm when I glance that direction!

Here’s a metal garden sculpture with three posies, that fill in a blank spot along the fence. Two or four would look strange. What do you think?

Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) bloom in late winter and always cheer me up , as they signal that spring is on the way! They have such a delicate drooping blossom with green dots and white tips that repeat the theme of three.

These are great. I especially love the Chihuly and ducks, and the snowdrops, which remind me of my northern childhood. I wonder what the research is about why odd number arrangements are more pleasing.
Thank you, Jill. I haven’t looked up the research, it is something I feel when I see groupings!
Love the birdhouses!
Thank you, Ilze. They are a happy sight to see!
Lindy, I really enjoyed your threes. I love the birdhouses and the metal garden structure.
Thank you, Beth. Finding interesting garden additions is a fun activity for me!
What a fun post. The three birdhouses are adorable. 👏
Thank you, Pepper. They seem to be gathering the most praise!
Lindy, what wonderful choices this week but first thanks so much for your congrats and lovely note! As for the images, all are terrific and I especially love that a)you found more than a single triplet in several of your images and b)you rearranged the birdhouses to a threesome which made your happy with the configuration. Perfect response this week!
Thank you,Tina!
Beautiful, Lindy! I really loved them all, but the birdhouses – yes, I recognize the feeling. They just had to be three!
Thank you, Ann-Christine!
Lovely response to the challenge, Linda!
Thank you, Dina!
I too love snowdrops and these are beautifully captured, Lindy.
Thank you, Sofia!
Lindy, this post is full of charm! I also use threes, and sometimes fives or ones, and really enjoy your photos & writing. My dad was a writer/editor, and I love reading well-written prose, which has always drawn me to your posts!

What lovely praise, Barbara. Thank you. Writing is how I sort through every day events in my life. I’ve been in a women writers circle since I retired 14 years ago. It keeps me going!
