It rarely snows here, so when I awoke this morning to the sight of large fluffy flakes drifting down — and staying — I did a little kid joy dance!

~ Monochrome Monday + WPC – Circle 2 ~

In the late 1970’s and early ’80’s, Creighton and I were avid fans of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. Whenever we could, we’d make the three hour trek to Seattle to attend games at the Kingdome. This shot is one I took looking up at the dome from the inside.

Sadly, the Kingdome was demolished by implosion in 2000.

~ Not Quite Friday Flyers + WPC – Now 3 ~

It was another stunningly beautiful day outside. Cold, with a heavy frost in the morning, then breezy and brisk as the day progressed. On our walk, Jello and I saw many birds flitting in the trees and thickets; sparrows, finches, siskens and a lovely bright breasted robin.

Though I wasn’t able to catch shots of birds with my iPhone, I did capture these of lovely branches and winter berries set upon a bright blue sky with just a whiff of clouds.

As I lift a glass to auld lang syne, I am grateful for community and I toast the challenges and opportunities we will share in the new year. Cheers!

~ Tuesday Two by Two + WPC – Now 3 ~

My father’s dementia has progressed so rapidly in the past ten days, it takes my breath away. On December 19, I stayed with him at my sister’s and we had sensible conversations as we watched the Democratic debate and ate dinner. The next day, refusing to use a walker to assist himself, he fell and was taken to the hospital. On Christmas Eve he was transferred from hospital to a rehabilitation facility, where he is now.

However, he is not cooperating with staff, and his brain has him in a time warp. He thinks my sister is our mother — she passed away twenty years ago.  Within another ten days he will be transferred to a memory care facility. He will not go gently.

After twenty-four days of rainfall, Portland Oregon has set a new record of 14.90 inches so far in December (official as of 12/28/15).

What a relief to have three days of mostly clear weather.

~ Winter Apples ~ Weekly Photo Challenge ~ Now ~

On my walk with Jello today, I spied this apple tree. Part of an abandoned orchard of pears and apples, they survive untended on land now owned by Bonneville Power Administration (BPA).

Clearly beyond their prime, the apples look like decorations on the now bare tree. Over the cold winter they will provide nourishment for birds, bugs and other critters.
