~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #9: Action ~

I have been out of action on WP this past week while my sister and I travelled to northern Idaho to visit our cousins, Duncan and David. We had reunited with Duncan (after thirty-odd years of not being in contact), three years ago. On this visit we stayed with him and spent an afternoon/evening with his older brother David, for the first time in forty-five years. It was amazing! With no wi-fi connectivity, I was unable to connect to WordPress, so even though it’s late, I decided to post to this challenge anyway.

Jello is the star today. Here she is straining at her lead, desperate to chase after the White Tail Deer we encountered in the road by David’s cabin near Priest Lake, Idaho.

Jello is a Beagle – therefore a hound – so her nose is always in action…

…neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow slows her down!

Well, sometimes the sun and being on a boat, limits her activity!

~ Take Two ~ Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Glass ~

Yesterday’s post featured these same glass pieces, with their color as the focus. Today I offer them in Black and White. What fun!

~ Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Tricky Turquoise ~

This week Cee begins a color odyssey with Teal, Aqua, Seafoam or Turquoise. After putting together a post using photos I had previously presented on WP, I scrapped it. Instead I’m presenting glass works I own that are in the specified color family. Tomorrow,  I’ll show you what they look like in B&W in response to Cee’s Black and White photo challenge!

~ Lense Artists Photo Challenge #8: COLORFUL ~

Tina Schell challenges us to lighten up and introduce some fun and frivolity to our posts this week. Levity – lightheartedness is often elusive – but always welcome!

This stained-glass window was a gift from my mother-in-law. What I know of its history is limited; an old-country artisan living in our region created it using old-world glass.

To look up at nature’s beautiful offering of plum blossoms set against a bright blue spring sky brings me a sense of peace and hope.

~ Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Sculptures, statues, carvings ~

In this challenge I’m presenting two of my own wood carvings. The Blue Teal Duck was my first major work. I loved the effect of the burned-in texture on the natural wood and decided not to paint it to make it look like a Blue Teal. Still love it!

Top photo is low color/sepia – below is black & white.

11″ (~28 cm) from beak to tail.

The second woodcarving is of a Haida Ceremonial Bowl. For many years I’ve studied Northwest Native American art, with a focus on the Salish nations from northwest Washington (USA) into British Columbia (Canada).

12″ (~30 cm) from end to end.

At one end is the whale motif, on the other is eagle – both are significant characters in Salish life and lore.

~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #7: Everyday Moments ~

Every day Jello takes me for a walk. Often we go to an open field where cottontail rabbits abound.

IMG_9683

It is common to see them nibbling clover in my front yard and living all over the neighborhood.

IMG_9929

Bumblebees have made a comeback in this region. Finding them working over flowers throughout the area on our walks, gives me hope for our planet.

IMG_9757

And, at the end of any everyday, I can count on Jello to find a cool place to rest!

Thanks to Leya for this everyday reminder of the little things in life that count!

~ Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Mirror images or reflections ~

Reflections and mirror images abound in nature, though taking out color makes this challenge more tricky!

IMG_E7681Jello paused just long enough for me to snap this shot with her reflection and shadow in the receding tide at Long Beach, WA.

IMG_7573

Cee allows the use of sepia and less color-saturation in her Black & White Photo Challenges. These Pussy-willows, reflected in shallow marsh waters, are much more interesting with a hint of color.

Sanderlings at Long Beach

Sanderling At Rest – Long Beach.

With so many photos of bird reflections in my archives, it was hard to narrow down what to present here. Sanderling At Rest is one of my favorites.

Bald Eagle in surf at Long Beach, WA

Although the reflection may not be as clear as other choices, it isn’t often one sees a Bald Eagle wading in the surf!

Though I can’t say definitively what duck this is, the photo fares better with a hint of color.
