~ Tuesday Two by Two ~ Of Kites & Hearts ~

This pair of bleeding heart blossoms reminds me of the final quote from Truman Capote’s, short story, A Christmas Memory .

P1010537

“A message saying [my friend had died] merely confirms a piece of news some secret vein had already received, severing me from an irreplaceable part of myself, letting it loose like a kite on a broken string. That is why, walking across a school campus on this particular December morning, I keep searching the sky. As if I expected to see, rather like hearts, a lost pair of kites hurrying towards heaven.”

The ABC Stage 67 adaption for television by Truman Capote and Eleanor Perry, (narrated by Capote) won two Emmy’s and the Peabody Award.

~ Monochrome Monday ~ Hawk ~

Looks like it might be a hawk perched up in the bare branches of my neighbor’s Pin Oak Tree, but it’s hard to say.

Jello and I heard a rhaspy cry as we were finishing our walk.  It reminded me of a blue jay, or a crow mimicking some other bird — like a hawk for instance.

That dense body, hooked beak and cropped tail with a line of white at the very tip is characteristic of both Cooper’s and Red-tailed Hawks. And, though it is still daylight and the air is cold, there were no little birds chowing down at my feeders while the bird of prey perched nearby!

~ Oooh, That Feels Good!!! ~

After a week when I have been appalled by the behavior of would-be leaders of the USA, I want to shake all their nasty crud out of my brain and scrub around the edges.  Jello shows me one very satisfying way to do that!

~ The Eagle Flies on Friday ~ Friday Flyers ~

Watching and listening to Bald Eagles is thrilling. Their high piping calls let you know they are near, though what it all means remains a mystery!

Determined to get some clear pictures of the eagles that perch on a snag just south of cabin 1, Creighton attached our camera to a tripod, focused it on the site and captured these beautiful shots.

~ Doe Bay ~ Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge ~

My Thursday thoughts are complex and unsettled.  One of the places on earth that helps me regain balance is in Washington State’s (USA) San Juan Islands.  This view, from Doe Bay, on Orcas Island shows why.

Even in black and white, the peace is palpable.

~ River Otters in the Wild ~ Tuesday Two by Two ~

I don’t see the river otters as often when we visit Orcas Island in autumn, as I did when we stayed during the summer.

Always fun to watch, these two seemed very comfortable as they fished and snacked in front of cabin 1, Beach Haven.
