Gentle Sundown

Lingering light reflected to create this hypnotizing pastel monotone. No wind. Slack tide waves whooshed over the beach pebbles — then the river otter….

~ A Bushel of Bushtit ~ Friday Flyers ~

Be it bird, bug, butterfly, leaf, seed or cloud – if it is something from nature that’s in the air, it’s a Friday Flyer!

Perhaps because they are so small, Psaltriparus minimus always arrive in a crowd  of family and friends.  Referred to simply as bushtit, it is one of the smallest passerines* in North America:  4″ (11 cm) long, weighing barely .20 oz. (5-6 g). Their coloration is muted grey and buff and doesn’t change significantly from season to season. Females have distinctive yellow eyes, while the males eyes are black.

With their characteristic “spit” “spit” call, American bushtit frequently assemble in my holly tree and besiege the suet feeder with relish!

*A notable feature of passerines (Passeriformes) is the arrangement of their toes, three pointing forward and one back, which facilitates perching. More than half of all bird species are Passeriformes.

~ Dove Soft ~ Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge ~ The Sense of Touch ~

I love everything about Mourning Doves; the cooing call from which they derive their name, their monogamous mating, curiosity and carefulness. Watching this dove fluff and preen delights my sense of the softness of feathers.

I believe this is used to harvest cucumbers and other low to the ground produce. Not positive though!

~ Harvest ~ Weekly Photo Challenge ~ Connected ~

As a kid, surrounded by fruit orchards in Wenatchee, then living on a farm in Pullman during my high school years, I have always felt connected to the rhythm of rural living.

Walking along the dirt roads at BiZi Farms, felt like home — the sounds of a light wind rustling corn stalks, the smell of damp earth and dusty trails, the sight of vast fields, farm animals and abandoned equipment rusting in place — all dear to my heart and soul.

~~~ Last Fledge ~ Friday Flyers ~~~
Be it bird, bug, butterfly, leaf, seed or cloud – if it is something from nature that’s in the air, it’s a Friday Flyer.
Bird parents are bringing their final batch of 2015 fledglings to my feeders so they can fatten up before moving on. These shots, taken casually last night, provide just a glimpse into the activity, as the young birds learn to navigate.
~ Cow Parsnip ~ WPC ~ From Every Angle ~
Though some may consider it a weed, cow parsnip (Heracleum maximum), is an herb native to North America and was used by indigenous tribes as a food, medicine and mosquito repellent.*
Also known as Indian celery and Indian rhubarb, cow parsnip can reach heights over 7 feet (2 m). It’s flower is characteristic of the carrot family with flat-topped or rounded umbrels about 8 inches (20 c) across. Its blossoms are always white.*
