Bleeding heart (Dicentra spectabilis) is a long-time favorite of mine, since it is perennial, with early spring blooms and thrives in my shady gardens.

~ In A Vase on Monday: Early Spring Mix ~

In an effort to spice up my posts, I’m trying out new challenges. This one, In a Vase on Monday, is hosted by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden. Daffodils though still bright, are looking rag-tag from the wind and rain they’ve endured, and tulips are up but not yet blooming.

Thick displays of Camelia blossoms still cover both my shrubs, and dear Helebores keep looking pretty even as they age! Red-flowering currant adds a little airiness to this informal wall vase.

~ Cormorant Deference Dance ~ Weekly Photo Challenge – Dance ~

A Double-crested Cormorant riding driftwood in the tide performed a series of submissive moves, as it approached and passed a dominant Double-crested Cormorant.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Notice how stark still the dominant bird remains upon its stationary float. This happened quite a distance out in the bay from where I stood, so the shots are cropped, and I increased saturation.

~ Kitchen…Items – Cee’s B&W Challenge + WPC – One Love ~

My mother gave me this mixmaster for a wedding gift. Whenever I use it, I am filled with the love of home cooking she instilled in me, and the love she gave so generously to Dad and their four children.

I saw this as Creighton drove us into Ilwaco, Washington on our way to the Long Beach Peninsula.  Later I made a point to go back and snap some shots!

~ One Love – Weekly Photo Challenge ~

Ours is one of those “love at first sight” stories. We met when I was a freshman at the U of Washington, in fall of 1967, and married in September, 1969. This photo was taken in February, 1970.

Forty-nine years after we met we remain best friends and he is still my one love.

~ Roofing the Roof ~ Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge ~

Roof:  ORIGIN Old English hrōf, of Germanic origin; related to Old Norse hróf ‘boat shed,’Dutch roef ‘deckhouse.’ English alone has the general sense ‘covering of a house’; other Germanic languages use forms related to thatch.

Thatch is not an option around here!

“You and me and rain on the roof
Caught up in a summer shower
Drying while it soaks the flowers
Maybe we’ll be caught for hours
Waiting out the sun”

~ Lovey Doves ~ Weekly Photo Chalenge – One love ~

For the past few years a pair of Mourning Doves have made our backyard part of their spring to fall habitat. They are such sweet birds. All afternoon into this evening, they gleaned in the primrose rock garden, drank at the water feature and attended to one another.

“The mourning dove is monogamous and forms strong pair bonds. Pairs typically reconvene in the same area the following breeding season, and sometimes may remain together throughout the winter. However, lone doves will find new partners if necessary.” Wikipedia
