~ Friday Flyers ~

As I walked the trail above Deadman’s Cove at Cape Disappointment, a mature male Bald Eagle soared over the ocean and headland below.        The sight took my breath away!

If it’s from nature and in the air — or can get there — it’s a Friday Flyer. Hope you enjoy the view!

~ Historic Lighthouse ~ Tuesday Two by Two ~

“The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse was constructed in 1856 to warn seamen of the treacherous river bar known by then as “the graveyard of the Pacific.” This is the oldest functioning lighthouse on the West Coast.”

“After missing the entrance to what was later named the Columbia River, English explorer John Meares dubbed the massive headland jutting out into the Pacific Ocean “Cape Disappointment.” That was in 1788. Almost 20 years later, Capt. William Clark and members of the Corps of Discovery explored the headland in their final push to the Pacific Ocean.”

~ Weekly Photo Challenge – Life Imitates Art ~

“Life imitates art far more than art imitates Life.” When I change the word imitate to its first synonym, emulate which means to match or surpass, I find Oscar Wilde is spot on; Life matches or surpasses art more than art matches/surpasses life. Still, I love having art in my life since it evokes memories, and provides aesthetic pleasure when I see it. This painting by Jeffrey Hull is an example.

However, for me, being in the setting always tops virtual reality!

~ Valentine’s Greetings from Jello ~

Wishing you sweetness and love on this Valentine’s day! IMG_4610

Saint Valentine (269 AD) defied Emperor Claudius the second who had issued an edict prohibiting the marriage of young people so that young men might be better warriors. Valentine risked his life to sanctify marriages secretly. He was caught, imprisoned, tortured and sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation. Sad end for such a noble effort.

Whitefriars Street Church is one of three churches that claim to house the remains of Valentine. Today, many people make the pilgrimage to the church to honor the courage and memory of this Christian saint. (cbn.com)

~ Weekly Photo Challenge: Life Imitates Art ~

If I lived anywhere near Prouts Neck, Maine I would go to Cannon Rock and wait, camera in hand, for this wave to show up!

Winslow Homer

But, I live three thousand miles (4800 km) away — on the other side of this continent. So, my best shot to pay homage to Winslow Homer is from a hike I took two days ago at Cape Disappointment National Park near Ilwaco, WA USA.

So many wonderful artists to appreciate!

Winslow Homer (1836-1910) American artist. “The life that I have chosen gives me my full hours of enjoyment…. The Sun will not rise, or set, without my notice and thanks.”         Scanned photo of painting and quote from:  The World of Winslow Homer © Time Inc.

Thank you Cheri Lucas Rowlands for this challenge.
