What an artful use of a fine resource — converting these large links of maritime chain into protective fencing around an area needing protection. It certainly stopped me in my tracks!

* With a bow to Don Covay who wrote the song “Chain of Fools,” and Aretha Franklin who first released the song as a single in 1967. I can hear the refrain in my brain!

I’m on my way to a class today at Independent Publishing Resource Center in Portland, to learn how to make Japanese Stab Bound notebooks. Hope to have snaps to show soon!
For today, a little rosiness seems fitting!

~ Weekly Photo Challenge – State of Mind ~
I stopped at a viewpoint on the way to Cape Disappointment State Park. After snapping some photos, I took Jello for a walk. I didn’t know where the trail would lead me — but it didn’t matter — this was an adventure!
As I crested a hill, I felt a sense of excitement wondering what the trail had in store for us. Many of my posts the past two weeks feature photos taken that afternoon.

~ Buried Treasure ~ Cee’s B&W – Sepia ~
At some point in his younger years, Dad fabricated this gun. My brother, Mike and I called it the ‘pirate pistol’.
Among many other skills, Dad was a master machinist. He had a gunsmith shop when we lived in Wenatchee, and made several shotguns and rifles for himself and his children. We thought the pirate pistol had been lost, until I unearthed it from the jumble in one of Dad’s disheveled closets last month.

~ Rough-skinned Newt ~ Cee’s Fun PC – Things That are Rough ~
When I spotted this critter on the trail at Cape Disappointment, I knew it was from the salamander family. It didn’t move, as I crept closer with my iPhone to snap these shots. (I’d already drained the battery in my Lumix!)

Rough-skinned Newt
A web search at the Burke Museum, helped me identify this as a Rough-skinned Newt (Taricha granulosa), found in Washington state west of the Cascades. Always wanting moisture, this newt can be found on land away from water, as in this setting. The silver iris in its eyes cinched the identification. I also learned that this is the most poisonous newt in Washington, as their toxins “can cause mild skin irritation, but can cause severe symptoms if ingested, including paralysis and/or death.” Luckily, Jello had passed right by without even sniffing it!

~Winter Surf – Monochrome Monday + WPC – Seasons 3 ~
Wind blows sand — waves crest and tumble — the Pacific roars.

~Cee’s Odd Ball + WPC – Season 2 ~
On this first winter visit to Longbeach, I was surprised at how much water filled the marshes between the Lodge where we stayed and the beach. Situated right next to the paved Discovery Trail pathways, the trip to the ocean in spring and summer is a short walk on the trail and then through the dunes.
Seeing this fire hydrant surrounded by natures bounty of water tickled the wry side of my funny bone!

~ Weekly Photo Challenge – Seasons ~
After another week of rainy days, today the sun is shining. I love this time of year when late winter gives way to early spring.
To celebrate and “embrace the season” here are some photos taken of flowers in my gardens this morning.
