~ Walk ‘n Sniff ~ Weekly Photo Challenge 3 ~ Beneath Your Feet ~

Jello likes the dogpark when there aren’t many other canines present.  Although she’s getting better at “meet and greet” she’s still anxious around bigger dogs. This morning we ambled from one shady part of the park to another, until the end.

What’s beneath my feet is hard pack dirt, mulch and weeds — what’s beneath hers is an adventure in sniffing!

Scarab ~ Monochrome Monday + WPC ~ Beneath Your Feet ~

Not sure what variety, but I’m pretty sure this beetle is of the scarab family (Scarabaeidae). It greeted me on a landing in a stairway to the condo I stayed at in Longbeach, WA.

“In ancient Egyptian religion, the sun god Ra is seen to roll across the sky each day, transforming bodies and souls. Beetles of the Scarabaeidea family (dung beetle) roll dung into a ball as food and as a brood chamber in which to lay eggs that are later transformed into larvae. For these reasons the scarab was seen as a symbol of this heavenly cycle and of the idea of rebirth or regeneration. The Egyptian god Khepri, Ra as the rising sun, was often depicted as a scarab beetle or as a scarab beetle-headed man. The ancient Egyptians believed that Khepri renewed the sun every day before rolling it above the horizon, then carried it through the other world after sunset, only to renew it, again, the next day.” wikipedia

~ Beach Walk ~ Weekly Photo Challenge ~ Beneath Your Feet ~

“The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach — waiting for a gift from the sea.”

~ From Land to Ocean ~ Weekly Photo Challenge ~ Beneath Your Feet ~

Since my first introduction to ferry landings and riding on a ferry (1960), I have loved the sensation of leaving the mainland and being transported over the ocean to arrive at a port of call.

The ground beneath my feet changes from dirt and tarmac to wooden docks and the steel floors and decks of the vessel.

The entire ship vibrates as we sail though rolling waters to our destination.

Landing and offloading is part of the adventure.

The path to one of my favorite places starts right here!

Something about drifted logs in a lake lagoon feels like home to me.

Essential Elements ~ Weekly Photo Challenge ~ Inspiration

High temperatures here have topped 100°f (38°c) since Tuesday. By late afternoon yesterday, as the usual marine westerly blew in, trees were withering in hot wind, shrubs wilting, birds had sheltered and the koi were seeking the bottom of my fairly shallow pond. Everything needed cooling moisture, so I set up a sprinkler that sprayed a fine shower over the corner around the pond.

P1040474 Water refreshed everything.  While I sat enjoying the cooling air, birds flitted in and out of the spray.

P1040500
“My own Monet,” I thought, as I snapped a succession of shots, with sunlight filtering through the firs behind the pond, water droplets hitting the surface creating a whirl of overlapping concentric circles on the surface, along with the koi making their own waves.

P1040546
The magic of nature and the ability to create beauty with natural elements always inspires me.

Tuesday’s with Cee’s Oddball Photo Challenge ~ Ridin’ high!

Saw this on the roof of a house in Oakridge, Oregon, as I was driving through. Just had to circle back so I could get a photo.

It was a private residence, so I didn’t want to intrude, but you can see why I did the double-take!
