~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #188: A Special Place ~

Over the years I have featured many of my favorite places, almost always in nature and close to a body of water. For this challenge from Karina of Murtaghs Meadow, I thought I would get interior and feature the inside of our condo at Long Beach, in particular “my” big purple barrel chair.

In this corner I set up my laptop computer, a small music system, and settle in to read, write, and create my WordPress posts, all while being able to look out upon the beauty of the grounds, the marshes/meadows and on to the ocean.

And when my daytime activities of walks to the beach, exploring the peninsula and taking care of my responsibilities are finished, I lean back with a glass of lovely wine and watch nightfall.

Thanks to Karina for guest hosting this week, and a special shout out of thanks to Anne Sandler for her Water challenge last week. I was so undone by the news, I could barely get my thoughts and photos posted, and forgot to acknowledge her at the time. I’m still reeling from the war Russia has brought on the world, though maybe a bit more composed this week. Praying for the people of Ukraine.

~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge # 187: Water ~

From way up here the earth looks very small,
It’s just a little ball of rock and sea and sand,
No bigger than my hand.

From way up here the earth looks very small,
They shouldn’t fight at all
Down there upon that little sphere.

Their time is short, a life is just a day,
You think they’d find a way.
You think they’d get along
And fill their sunlit days with song.

From way up here the earth is very small,
It’s just a little ball, so small, so beautiful and dear.

Their time is short, a life is just a day,
Must be a better way
To use the time that runs among the distant suns.

From way up here the earth is very small,
It’s just a little ball, so small, so beautiful and dear

~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #186: Low Light ~

Fog is one of my favorite special effects with photography. Just about any time of year, fog and mist are common along the Long Beach Peninsula. I featured the first photo below for a Wordless Wednesday post last month. It is so quiet, it’s worth repeating! The Brown Pelicans in fog and a branch with dancing grace are also repeats that bear being seen again.

Mallards in the Fog

Clouds are another of my favorite natural light filters. All three of the photos below were taken on different days in various seasons as the sun was lowering into the west on the Long Beach Peninsula, WA. Clouds diffuse the light and add dramatic impact when the sun breaks through as in the lower left photograph.

A classic, “not a cloud in the sky,” sunset with the end of day sky reflecting on the marshes at the Breakers, Long Beach, WA.

Sunrise also provides lovely filtered light. Though I’m usually not outside with my camera when the sun comes up, every once in a while I experience that magic! Below, Lake Tahoe Basin, Dollar Point, CA.

~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #185: Change ~

With the loss of our dear beagle Jello, came an emptiness which from experience, we know can only be filled by inviting another beagle into our home and hearts. Jello was the fifth beagle to be part of our family – our fourth rescue.

Finding a specific breed, sex and age of rescue dog takes some research, persistence and luck. When I saw a six year old beagle named Max on the Hay-Dude Critter Rescue site, I asked Creighton, “male or female?” Female, we agreed. The next day I checked the site again, and there was Daisy, a female, and as it turned out Max’s sister. She’d been adopted, but the placement didn’t work out because she chased the cats. (Duh, she’s a beagle!) She was back in foster care, and I jumped right on the chance to adopt her. Then, as we thought about it, we decided since they’d grown up together for six years, keeping them together was the humane thing to do, and we sprang for both of them.

As I write this, Max and Daisy are en-route from San Antonio, Texas to the Pacific Northwest, via TXCR Transport. We are scheduled to rendezvous at noon on Friday, 2/12/22 in Portland, OR. So I guess you could say, we are all in a state of flux – transition – change. Oh, my, this will be fun!

~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #184: Travel has taught me ~

Most of my traveling in the past fifteen years has been by automobile and with a dog. So, in response to Amy’s challenge this week, I offer what I have learned to make traveling with a dog comfortable and fun for all involved. Before leaving home, make sure your vehicle is in top running condition, tires are inflated properly, and gas tank is full. Keep 1 leash per dog, in the vehicle at all times, along with a supply of poop bags, small water cups and bottles of fresh water. Dogs should always have their id tags on, whether on a collar or harness. Pack their food, treats and meds in daily portion packets. Bring at least one of their favorite toys, their pillow bed, and two or more of their blankets, so wherever you stay will feel more like home.

Some folks use crates, however we like our beagles to be able to be close to us, sit up and watch the world go by, and have a comfortable, safe nest to snuggle into.

Know in advance when the next rest/comfort stop and change of driver will be: how many miles and approximately how long. Allow enough time when you stop for your dog to stretch and sniff.

Book overnight stays in places that accept canines, and take you dog for a walk around the exterior of the premises before settling in.

As much as possible, keep your dog’s daily routine consistent: breakfast at the usual time, then out (always on a leash) for a potty walk, and at the end of the days drive, dinner at the usual time, and another potty walk before lights out.

As always, wherever your travels take you, please respect our earth, be kind and stay safe.🐾
