~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge 114: Negative Spaces ~

I love wide open spaces. In photography the absence of distractions makes the subject POP, sometimes creating a sense of calm and peace, and other times providing space for visual drama.

Juvenile Western Gull (Larus Occidentals) scavenges the shoreline, Long Beach, WA.

Dune grass fronds at Sundown.

Immature Bald Eagle landing atop a snag.

Quiet morning walk.

Late summer wedding altar.

Foxgloves reach for the heavens.

Jello waits for me at the top of the berm looking out on the Pacific Ocean.

~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge 112 ~ Pick A Word ~

Comfortable

Jello loves it when we are at our beach condo. This is her favorite spot to rest and relax after a romp through the dunes!

Growing

If you follow my blog, you know I am a bird lover. This fledgling Downy Woodpecker waits on top of a suet feeder for mama to give it some of the good stuff.

Tangled

A jumble of feathers, seaweed, branches and other flotsam caught my eye walking on the beach.

Crowded

Crowds of people are not my favorite thing, so for this one I’ve chosen a crowd of Brown Pelicans. Any excuse to feature these incredible birds!

Exuberant

Last year a dear friend married her sweetheart. They were in high spirits as they completed their vows.

~ Miller Lake ~ A Gem of the Cascades ~

During my fishing vacation, my sister and brother-in-law took me on a day trip to Miller Lake, about an hour from our campground.

P1120075

Along the way we stopped to take pictures of Mt. Thielsen, an extinct shield volcano, elevation 9,183 feet (2799 meters), not far from Crater Lake.

P1120086

A natural freshwater lake with a maximum depth of 145 feet (40mm), the lovely shades of the water was the main reason my sister wanted me to see it. Gorgeous colors!

P1120099

Stocked with Rainbow, Kokanee and Brown trout, people fished from shore when we visited. The sandy beach and clear water invite visitors to swim, kayak, canoe and paddle board. No motors are allowed which keeps the lake waters quiet and peaceful.

P1120113

If this canoe were mine, I would have taken Jello out to explore!

P1120084

Instead, we wandered along the shoreline, then took a short walk on a nearby trail. Such a pretty place – worth visiting again!

~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge 111 ~ Everyday Objects ~ Tools That Work ~

I love tools, like this crock of kitchen utensils, at hand beside my stove-top.

P1120115

To be at ease, I want the tools on the kitchen counter to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, like the hand-made ceramic herb jars, and the wooden pepper-mill, hand-crafted by a friend.

P1120119

This antique striking clock is both handsome and useful. It keeps perfect time (so long as it’s wound!), and I can hear it from all rooms upstairs in my home.

P1120122

Next to the front door, a rustic hook holds the key to our locking mailbox. The copper and crystal art piece was created by a dear friend who passed away a few years ago. It is a lovely reminder of her sweet spirit.

P1120124

In the music room downstairs, the walls are lined with Creighton’s massive CD collection of Jazz, Classical, Rock, Folk and Celtic music. The bass featured is a Fender Precision, one of his four bass guitars.

P1120125

“What was it? She wondered. What happened on their first encounter that seized her heartstrings and never let go? Was it his bright blue eyes? Yes. His smile? Yes. A voice rich in laughter? Yes, and his beautiful Gibson six-string guitar.”
