~ Pigeon Guillemot – Friday Flyers ~

Pigeon Guillemot (Cepphus columba), is a diving shorebird native to the coastlines from California to Alaska. I have seen them often in pairs, skimming above white-capped waters — wingtip to wingtip — at what appears to be supersonic speed! Yesterday, on a hike to Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, I stood on a bluff and spotted a small colony in the cove below.

P1060436 - Version 3

“During the breeding season, they can be found on rocky islands and mainland cliffs that are protected from predators.”

P1060432 - Version 2

“The nest is a shallow scrape in a pile of soil, pebbles, or shell scraps. Both parents incubate the eggs for about four weeks. Both parents feed the young until they leave the nest at about 4-6 weeks after hatching.”

P1060438 - Version 2“Pigeon Guillemots forage by diving and swimming underwater, propelled mostly by their wings, but, unlike most alcids, they also use their feet for propulsion. They forage by searching the bottom, diving up to 150 feet. They can also sometimes be seen on the surface of the water swimming with their heads submerged.”

If it’s from nature and in the air, or can get there, it’s a Friday Flyer!

~ Tiptoes ~ Cee’s B&WPC – Shoes or Feet (human or animal) ~

I love pedicures. After learning about the nasty mess feet can become if not cared for, I vowed to make having a pedicure every 3-4 weeks a health priority. It’s also fun to sport expertly painted toenails. This week, I succumbed to adding some flowers!

~ Tulipa ~ One Word Photo Challenge – Bulb ~

The online dictionary I use defines bulb as “a rounded underground storage organ present in some plants…a plant grown from a bulb.”

P1060353

I just removed these tulips from a planter, and will provide soil, water and light to the bulbs (Tulipa plants) so they can die back naturally, thereby directing more energy into the bulbs (underground storage units).

~ In A Vase On Monday ~

My vase today features Rosa ‘Mr. Lincoln’ — a velvet red hybrid tea rose with a classic deep fragrance to match it’s rich color. Rosa ‘Chrysler Imperial’, Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ and Salvia officinalis ‘Berggarten’ fill out the arrangement.

~ Weekly Photo Challenge – Earth ~

This photo is of a poster we purchased in 1970, from the Whole Earth Catalog. I had it mounted on hardboard and framed. It remains an awe-inspiring vision to me.

~ American Goldfinch Migration ~ Friday Fliers ~

I spent a couple days with my sister at her home in Corvallis, Oregon, to do more cleanup at Dad’s place this week. Diana is a bird lover too, and her open backyard draws in flocks of American Goldfinch as they migrate. At one point we agreed there were probably 50 in this tree!

Diana uses sunflower chips in tall cylindrical feeders. As you can see, it is a popular combination with Goldfinch!

~ Cee’s B&WPC – Facial Expressions + WPC – Admiration 5 ~

If you have followed my blog for a while you know that my beagle Jello, survived a serious accident last September. That she is alive and doing well today, I attribute to many people — her angels. This first shot was taken a couple weeks after the accident.

It took two surgeries to get her stitched back together, and by December we were able to resume our normal walks, something we both look forward to every day. Though this photo is out of focus, you can see her excitement, as she stretches up my legs to offer me my sock! Notice the blur of a wagging tale too!

In February she underwent another surgery to remove a metal suture from her lip. It had generated a large amount of dead tissue and infection.

~ Teachers – Pivotal People ~ WPC – Admiration 4 ~

On Monday I began a series highlighting teachers who have guided my life, starting with family. Tuesday I put a spotlight on Mom, featuring a photo of her in the prime of life. This morning I included a nature photo, as I am a child in nature, from a family which respects our natural world.

Now I present four men who had a profound influence on the course of my life journey. Dad encouraged me to express my creativity and use my brain. He saw the potential in me and provided support when I needed it. Vic Moore, my art teacher at Pullman High School for four years, nurtured my spirit as he taught me the basics of visual arts and the art of being.

Many years later, when I applied for a position as an educational counselor, Greg Merrill and Terry Nelson saw the light in me and hired me into a fulfilling thirty year career of high school counseling.

Bless you all!
