~ Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #182: Interesting Objects ~

All of the subjects I selected for this week’s photo challenge were photographed on the Long Beach Peninsula. Below is a Fresnel Lens used for decades in two lighthouses to warn sailors near Cape Dissapointment. I love how light reflects and fractures along the bevels of the glass.

This first order Fresnel lens that lighted both Cape Disappointment and North Head lighthouses for decades, is now a featured attraction at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Ilwaco, WA.

Walking the beach one day I came upon this mostly intact Bald Eagle eggshell. What a find!

Folks on the Long Beach Peninsula have a hearty sense of humor. At Christmastime they decorate this crab-trap Christmas tree structure with holiday lights and have an evening celebration to welcome the season.

When I was a kid, individual amusement rides like the one below were in front of most of the big grocery stores. Just put your nickle in the slot and gallop off into the sunset!

~ Lens-Artists Challenge #181: Double Dipping ~

The Long Beach Peninsula, has received eleven inches (28 cm) of rain so far in January 2022, which prompted me to stretch this week’s ‘Double Dipping’ theme to include a side by side photo comparison showing what our marshes at the Breakers look like now compared to last spring. Rain and flooding is our weather in the Pacific Northwest (Washington-USA) which fits right in with the theme this week from Becky – https://travelwithintent.com/

On our first walk to the beach, I wore knee high rain boots and had only an inch to spare as I waded parts of the Discovery Trail out to the beach. Water in the foreground of the above photo covers what is usually bare ground where folks cut across on foot or bicycle. Jello is all Beagle. Water is not her favorite place to be. On our return from the beach, she let me know she was not interested in swimming home! ~ Lens-Artists Challenge #180: Favorite Images of 2021 ~

This past year was one of many ups and downs. We learned to ‘pivot’ and ‘pirouette’ as the winds of change and chance tossed us one challenge after another. This week, Tina invites us to select favorite photos we’ve taken in 2021. Whether these are my best or not, they represent the scope of my photography this last year, and the hope I have for this coming year.

~ Lens-Artists Challenge # 179: Serene ~

I am most serene when near a body of water. Something about the ebb and flow pulls the anxiety out of my bones, leaving me feeling much more tranquil.

Blue is the color of serene to my eyes. A bit of sparkle from the sun creates a sense of peacefulness.

~ Lens-Artists Challenge #178: You Choose ~

Our wonderful beagle, Jello, was born on the Winter Solstice eleven years ago. She came to live with us when she was four. The young man who gave her to us had her papers from Maryland, so we know her birthday and that originally she was named Blue, likely due to her blue-tick coloring.

Among her favorite activities are running free and sniffing – always that nose is busy!

When riding in the truck, instead of settling in for a nap, Jello likes to watch the world go by out the window. She knows when we’re going to the beach, and savors big whiffs of the salty ocean air, as we pass through Astoria!

Taking me for a walk every day is her one job, and Jello is very conscientious about this duty!

Although fishing is “not her thing,” being with me wherever I go is a must.

After all the activity (and sometimes right in the middle of it!) another of Jello’s favorite things is snoozing – or as we call it – snooze cruising. 🙂

I’ll close with one of my favorite photos, Jello silhouetted against the golden dune grasses at sunrise.

~ Lens-Artists Challenge #177 – Celebrating ~

Being a word-nerd, I couldn’t help but look up the synonyms for celebrate. Oh, my! What a wonderful mix of options celebrate offers. Here are a few with photos from my archives.

To have fun and raise a glass of cheer most certainly fits the theme. The photo above was taken by Jocelyn when Creighton and I visited her at Priest Lake, Idaho. We were basking in the beautiful scenery at Elkins Resort, near her cabin and making plans for future get-togethers.

In the summer of 2017, Creighton and I attended my 50th high school reunion in Pullman,Washington. We connected with old friends, and made new ones during this celebration that commemorates life when we were young, remembers our history together and honors those no longer with us.

When my father passed away in 2016, I took it upon myself to locate my long-lost cousin, Duncan (center left). He and I were the same age and had been close when we were in grade school. Thanks to linked-in we reconnected. What a delight it was for my sister Diana (center right) and I to meet up with him at Crescent Creek, Oregon. Must say we did a fair amount of toasting to celebrate this reunion!

When my dear sweet friend Joellene married her beau John, they threw quite a party. I felt honored to be there to celebrate them, and to rejoice in the wonder of their union.

Friends since we met in 1982, John, Greg, Ruth and I are compadres. Now all retired and well into our elder years, we make a point of having lunch together once a year to enjoy being together, catch up and celebrate a lifetime of friendship.
